Schools & Educators

Supporting safer classrooms, creative expression and more human ways of seeing

I spent 25 years working in secondary education before becoming a trauma-informed coach, artist and creative facilitator.

I now support schools through two connected areas of work:

Trauma-Informed Classrooms

Art, Cleft Education and Advocacy

Schools can choose a single talk or workshop, a staff training day, a bespoke student project or longer-term consultancy and support.

Trauma-Informed Classrooms

Understanding what sits beneath behaviour.

Behaviour is communication, but in a busy classroom, it does not always feel that way.

When pupils are anxious, overwhelmed, disconnected or living in a state of protection, this can appear as defiance, withdrawal, disruption, perfectionism, emotional outbursts or an inability to engage.

My trauma-informed classroom work helps educators understand the relationship between the nervous system, emotional safety, behaviour and learning.

This is not about removing expectations, boundaries or responsibility. It is about helping staff respond with greater understanding, confidence and curiosity, so that students are more able to feel safe, connect and learn.

Support may include:

Trauma-informed consultancy for schools and leadership teams

Staff training and professional development

Understanding nervous-system states in the classroom

Practical approaches to behaviour and emotional regulation

Supporting relational and emotional safety

Reflective sessions for teachers, pastoral teams and school leaders

Creative approaches to regulation, communication and connection

Bespoke talks, inset sessions and training days

Longer-term support to embed trauma-informed practice

The work is practical, grounded and shaped around the realities of school life.

Art, Cleft Education and Advocacy

Using creativity to challenge assumptions and widen understanding.

As an artist, mother within the cleft community and founder of the 100 Cleft Portraits project, I work with schools to explore representation, identity, facial difference, belonging and the ways we learn to see one another.

These sessions create space for students and staff to think beyond diagnosis, appearance and first impressions.

Through portraiture, storytelling, exhibitions and creative workshops, students are invited to explore what cannot always be seen immediately: personality, humour, courage, experience, connection and individuality.

This pathway may include:

Whole-school assemblies and inspirational talks

Cleft awareness and education

Facial difference, representation and inclusion

Talks drawing on lived experience as a mother and advocate

Portrait and identity-based art workshops

Exhibitions from the 100 Cleft Portraits collection

Creative workshops for pupils, families or staff

Support for art, PSHE, wellbeing and inclusion programmes

Bespoke projects connected to a school’s curriculum or community

Longer-term creative residencies or advocacy projects

The Abbey School, Reading

In October at The Abbey School in Reading, I am developing a two-day artist, speaker and exhibition visit bringing together art, lived experience, student creativity and community connection.

The visit includes a whole-school assembly, an exhibition of portraiture, a student workshop and opportunities for pupils, families and staff to engage with the work.

The creative workshop, Portraits Beyond First Impressions, invites students to use line, shape, colour and words to communicate something about a person that cannot be understood simply by looking at their face.

The wider project encourages pupils to question assumptions and understand that nobody is simply a diagnosis, a visible difference, a medical story or a before-and-after image.

Bespoke Support for Your School

Every school community is different.

You may be looking for:

A one-off assembly or staff training session

A creative workshop for a particular year group

Support with behaviour and emotional safety

A cleft education or facial-difference awareness project

An exhibition and community event

A longer-term programme of consultancy, training or creative work

We can begin by discussing what is happening within your school, what you would like pupils or staff to understand and the type of support that would be most useful.

Book an appointment to discuss your school’s needs, thoughts and requirements.

This is an informal opportunity to explore your ideas, ask questions and consider what meaningful support could look like for your pupils, staff and wider community.
